Fertilizer

Compost and manure is the gold standard of fertilizers, however in this section I only want to focus on low bacteria fertilizers. (cleaner fertilizers)

Dried Seaweed

   Description:
Very well rounded fertilizer, with micronutrients, trace minnerals, and natural plant hormones. Contains plant growth hormone, conditions soil, and helps with benefical microbial activity.

Uses:
Soil amendment or steeped into a liquid for foliar spray
Plants:
Tomatoes & peppers (summer), leafy greens (spring & fall), roses (spring & fall), fruit trees (spring & summer)

Wood Ash

   Description:
Highly alkaline with two purposes, raising soil pH in overly acidic soils while supplying potassium and calcium. Best applied in late winter or early spring before planting giving it time to work into the soil. Because of its alkalinity, too much can swing the pH too far and lock out nutrients. Avoid using it around acid loving plants.

Uses:
Soil amendment
Plants:
Garlic (fall plant, summer harvest), lavender (spring & summer), brassicas (spring & fall), stone fruits (spring & summer)

Pine Needle Meal

   Description:
Slow release, midly acidic fertilizer made from dried and ground pine needles. Gradually lowers soil pH as it breaks down, making it excellent for alkaline soil that needs acidity. Delivers trace minerals and improves soil aeration and drainage. It breaks down slow feeding plants across multiple seasons. Also contains mild antifungal properties that can help suppress certain soil-borne diseases.

Uses:
Soil amendment
Plants:
Blueberries & strawberries (summer), azaleas/rhododendrons (spring), potatoes (spring & summer)

Crab Shell Meal

   Description:
Made of ground crustacean shells. Rich in calcium and magnesium. Boosts plants immune system against soil-borne pests and fungal diseases. Promotes good bacteria growth.

Uses:
Soil amendment
Plants:
Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers (summer), roses (spring & fall)

Volcanic ash

   Description:
Made of volcanic mineral deposits, contains 70 trace minerals and rare earth elements that are almost entirely absent from modern, heavily farmed soils. Widely remineralizes. It is extreemly slow to break down making it last several seasons and will gradually improve mineral balance.

Uses:
Soil amendment
Plants:
Almost all vegtables (spring & summer), grapes (spring & fall), herbs (spring & summer), corn (summer)

Coffee grounds

   Description:
Slightly acidic without the risk of burning. Nitrogen rich with a slow release into soil. They are good for plants that perfer acidic conditions, imporve soil texture by loosening compacted soil and enhancing drainage. It attracts earthworms and mildly deter slugs and snails

Uses:
Soil amendment
Plants:
Blueberries (summer), roses (spring & fall), tomatoes & carrots & hydrangeas (spring & summer)
